How does divorce and separation
affect children?
- About 1 in 3 children
experience the divorce of their parents.
- Children's reactions
to parental separation/divorce vary greatly - the child's age, sex and experiences
during and after the separation/divorce influence their reaction.
- Most children do not
want their parents to separate even if the family is unhappy. Many secretly
believe that their parents will get back together.
- It is common for children
(especially younger ones) to feel responsible for the separation/divorce.
- Children experience many
of the same emotional reactions to divorce as adults, such as anger, sadness,
rejection, and loneliness.
- Difficulties can arise
in a number of areas, including school and peer relations. Some chidlren experience
behavioral or emotional problems.
- Within a year or two,
many children adjust to their parents' divorce.
